An applied linguist is a person whose
primary goal is to apply relevant ideas from areas of inquiry like linguistics,
psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and education among others, to language
pedagogy (Ellis, 1997, p. 31).
Therefore, an applied linguistics job involves a
great deal of adaptation of relevant ideas from relevant research to language
teaching, learning and testing. That is, applied linguists have to play the
role of intermediaries between theory and practice, research and pedagogy,
technical and practical knowledge, theoreticians and practitioners.
